Volunteer with the Animals
Many of our volunteers spend their time at the shelter socializing, playing with, training, or just petting the animals; this hands-on time is valuable to the animals. We also have off-site opportunities with the animals in the form of bottlefeeding/foster care for orphaned puppies and kittens, and satellite adoption events throughout the Greater Cincinnati area. If you’d like to volunteer with our animals, we request you attend a general orientation program, and get some training for the type of pet you wish to work with.
General Orientation Program
This program lasts about 90 minutes, includes a tour of the League for Animal Welfare shelter, and covers the basics of our organization. General orientations are usually the first Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. To reserve a seat in the general orientation, contact our volunteer coordinator at lfaw_vols@fuse.net or (513) 735-2299 after the 15th of each month for the next month’s orientation (each orientation fills one month in advance.)Cat Training
If you are interested in working with the cats, there is a specialized cat training that takes place immediately following the general orientation and lasts for an additional 1/2 hour.
Dog Training
Volunteers who choose to work with our dogs are asked to make a commitment of four hours per month. We will schedule a one-on-one session after you complete our general orientation program. This second training session covers how to safely interact with the dogs and fellow volunteers.
Once you’ve completed both the general orientation and your specialized programs, you’re ready to go! You’re welcome at the shelter as much as your schedule will allow.

Special Considerations
Volunteers must be 18 to work with the dogs or 16 to work with the cats if they are without a parent or guardian. We welcome kids younger than these ages as long as they are under the supervision of their parent or guardian.
